The number 23 deserves a note too. With five substitutions available, a 23-man list is no longer a bench inventory; it is a design for four different scenarios inside 90 minutes. Third goalkeeper Livaković exists purely for emergencies. Hamza Abdelkarim's slot exists to solve one specific problem.

The midfield is where this match gets decided

All week the European feeds have circled one question: does Flick have his front three available? That is the easy story, and the least informative one.

The central pair is what sets Barcelona's tempo. Rodri anchors, holding position in front of the defence, taking the ball from the centre-backs and distributing wide. Pedri plays half a beat higher, drifting into the inside channel where he can receive between Feyenoord's lines. When those two hold the correct distance, Barcelona control the ball and control the clock.

Cancelo and Baldé give Flick two completely different full-back profiles. Cancelo tucks inside and becomes a third midfielder. Baldé hugs the touchline and runs the full length. With Rodri anchoring, Cancelo can invert without leaving space behind him. When Pedri pushes high, Baldé must stay. One player standing in the wrong place breaks the whole structure.

The contrarian read: noise around the front three

People will talk about Flick having Yamal, Raphinha and Fermín López available. True. But having enough attackers has never been Barcelona's problem in the last three seasons. The problem is who keeps the ball when the team is squeezed.

Over the past two campaigns, Barcelona have conceded most of their goals in the opening 15 minutes of the second half, when the midfield loses structure after the opponent raises the press. Second, how often Cancelo inverts. Every time he does, Baldé covers the flank alone, and Feyenoord will funnel the ball there.

Third, the minute Hamza Abdelkarim is called. Before the 70th, it is an experiment. After the 75th with Barcelona leading, it is a decision already planned, and this name will keep appearing.

The 23 names are only a starting point. The real match lives in the off-ball runs nobody records, and in the players who must carry the position of someone who is not there.
