The Seminarian Send-off was started 37 years ago and continues to be sponsored by the Serra Club of DuPage County. Its purpose was and still is to encourage and support the seminarians of the Diocese of Joliet as they return to their respective seminaries for another year of formal discernment and education that, prayerfully, will lead to thier eventual ordination to the holy priesthood.
Since 1974, the Send-off has grown in attendance from less than 100 people to nearly 400. The parents of the seminarians are also invited to attend as the guests of the Serra Club as well as are the priests of the diocese. In addition to the seminarians, honored guests include the Bishops of the diocese and the Director of Vocations. Serrans and many other members of the diocese join in “sending off” these men who are preparing themselves to serve our Lord and his Church.
Traditionally, the highlight of the Send-off occurs when the Director of Vocations asks each seminarian to talk briefly about himself and his discernment experience.
The monks of St. Procopius in Lisle, IL have generously allowed the Serra Club to host the Seminarian Send-off at Benedictine University since its inception.
Everyone interested is invited to attend the annual Seminarian Send-off.
